Michael Johnson’s painterly process is strongly connected to his enjoyment of instrumental music. He is particularly fond of the Oud, an ancient Arabic instrument similar in appearance to a three-stringed lute. Indeed, the artist has often compared the act of painting to the relationship between the musician and the instrument – the way that the sonic vibrations might be transposed onto the canvas. He refers to these as ‘chords’ of colour.
