Deep Space is informed by the artist’s understanding of the capacity for colour to create new perceptual spaces. The division of the picture plane into horizontal bands echoes Johnson’s earlier hard-edged paintings from the 1960s. The colours shift between flat planes of colour, and dappled blues and whites suggest filtering light. Deep Space also prompts other associations such as the horizon line in the landscape, architectural spaces, shutters and window blinds.
