Following an intense period of self-reflection, the artist describes how he wanted to lift himself to a cheerier state by painting buoyant, happily themed works. In the Kung Fu Series, the artist plays with the regalia of the Chinese warrior as a visual motif. Yet at the heart of these paintings is a wariness, or preparation for self-defense. The figures stand guarded, ready for a fight. The threat is always beyond the frame of the painting – the viewer is left to imagine the danger.
