Traditional Chinese ink wash painting – shui-mo hua – comes with its share of rules and regulations. It is believed to have developed during the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907) and was further refined during the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279). At heart, Chen genuflects to this history. Like much shui-mo hua his paintings are minimal in line, seeking the heart of their subject.
